This was a little younger, but I think that's good to have some less intense options for students, it kind of reminded me of The Legend of Korra, I liked that it brought up some more serious issues without being quite so heavy

There were so many things I loved about this book. From the author's use of a fictitious world to teach kids about systemic racism and recognizing your privilege to the analysis of colonialism at a middle grade level, this book is a must-have for a middle school library. The diverse characters and strong women leading the charge in this book really sold it for me. My only complaint is the addition of a magical aspect to the otherwise science fiction universe. I tend to keep magic and science separate and a few parts of this book relied on magic to tie up some plot points rather than science as I would have preferred.

This was an e-arc that I received via Edelweiss. All opinions are my own.
I also preordered the audiobook, which is the format in which I read it.  This a middle grade dystopian where Earth has been destroyed by a flood.  Flood City is the last habitable place on Earth and is being protected/held hostage by the Star Guard.  The Chemical Barons escaped the floods and want to return to Earth. This was interesting and a quick read. I wouldn't say that we got the same depth of characters from the author of  Shadowshaper, but I did enjoy watching the characters come into their own Each had their own path to take, but they all came together in the end.  TBH- I am little over the conflicts that arise over skin color and painting an entire group with the same brush.
