Story emphasizes much more on outside stories than the story of Chris/Alex, which wasn't necessarily a negative, just not what I'd expected from the story. Story heavily relies on recounts by miscellaneous individuals who interacted with Chris/Alex. The book also regularly discusses adventures of the author that are largely independent of the story, aside from describing how he and Chris/Alex are alike.

I enjoyed the way the book was written - intertwined with Chris’ story was the author’s and the way he found out the information he then used to write the book.

I really enjoyed Into the Wild. Aside from how well-written and well-researched it is, I think my favorite thing about this book was how it had me considering for days how I viewed this tragedy and how I viewed Chris McCandless. It was a constant oscillation between believing him to be ignorant and wishful versus believing him to just be a hopeful dreamer that bad luck befell at the worst time. I actually didn't know much of anything about Chris McCandless before reading this book, including how he came to die in the Alaskan bush. Krakauer's explanation of all the events leading up to his death paints a fantastic picture of a man who, I think, ultimately died because of something that no one could have anticipated. It's a sad yet somehow inspiring story.

I wish it had been written in chronological order but other than that a decent read.
