I made it 30 minutes into this book last spring and stopped because, trigger warning,

it starts with suicide because someone is losing everything and I was afraid it would push me over the edge.

But the last category on my 2023 reading challenge is "a book you started but didn't finish," So I gave it a another shot this week. I wish so much that I had made it to minute 36 last spring, which is oddly the whole point of this unbelievably beautiful and hopeful book. Spoiler alert: she thrives.

Midnight Library was sweet and reflective. A bit predictable, but it was pretty short so you didn't need to wait long to validate your expectations. Kind of like a slice of apple pie. You know what it tastes like, and it's just right.

I have not read one bad Matt Haig book ever. This one was a masterpiece! Intelligently written, and dripping with motivational words of wisdom and encouragement, king of empathy—Matt Haig—was really in his element in this one. This book hit me hard. It gave me the push that I was looking for and needed to continue living. If 35 year old Nora Seed(Female mc that I relate to on a cellular level) have not figured things out fully just yet, but was able to come to the realization that her life—imperfect, hopeless, and dreadful as it may seem— is still precious, then maybe 26 year old me can have/feel that too. Maybe I can treat myself a bit more kindly, and with more patience, and with a softness that I always graciously give to others. Through this book I realized that our perspective on things really do play a big role in how we feel overall about everything. I hope I do not sound out of touch for saying this (I am going through a very shitty phase in my life too), but this book shows you how real cognitive distortions are, and that even though it’s not easy to just stop having them, it’s also not entirely impossible or undoable. We just need to reframe our thoughts and see things from a fresh/new perspective. But yeah. I know from experience that it’s not easy, but it’s just something I saw throughout the book. And I am grateful that it had penetrated my tortured soul, and made me realize things. 10/10! This book is this year’s Sweet Bean Paste for me; thought provoking, emotional, and beautifully packed with life lessons and Philosophical quotes. I would definitely recommend it to friends who are also struggling like me.

"Where there are books, there is always a temptation to open them."

Reminiscent of the movie "It's A Wonderful Life," except instead of only experiencing one alternative, the protagonist experiences many.  It does get a bit preachy, but so did "It's A Wonderful Life."
