I had a Kaya American Girl doll when I was a kid and decided to revisit the books. This was actually a lot more respectful towards the Nimiipuu people than I expected it to be since it was written in 2002. Very sweet story and definitely a good one for little girls to read.

I read this whole series to my kids. I found it interesting, but for some reason this series had a harder time holding my kids' attention, which surprised me because they have really enjoyed the other american girl series we have read in the past. (Molly and Felicity)

An American Girl story about Kaya, a Nez Perce Native American, living in 1764.
I liked the story.

[Reading American Girl books I never read as a kid for the very first time 1/6]
I recently found the Kaya box set at my local used bookstore and knew I had to get it. This was phenomenal! I've always admired American Girl's commitment to historical accuracy, but their dedication truly shows in Kaya's books. The thorough research, incorporation of Nez Perce words, and clear reverence for the Nez Perce people's culture was wonderful to see in a story made so accessible to children. Although I would've loved to have read this when I was younger, I'm so glad I didn't miss out on Kaya's books entirely. They are criminally underrated!

Reading this as an adult, I was rather impressed with the amount of research that went into this to tell a culturally appropriate story. I started reading this with a critical lens to see what they got right and what they got wrong and ultimately finished the books satisfied. I’m glad Kaya has not yet been retired, her story is very important for girls to understand.
