Long a fan of the fine film, I decided to finally read the novel and it does not disappoint, though I am not sure it is actually more frightening than the film. What I enjoyed about the novel is the more in-depth investigations Fr. Damien Karras goes into as he researches Regan's case in the novel, and the investigation into Burke Denning's death by Det. Kindermann is given much greater breadth in the novel. All of this adds up to a more well rounded story. I need to see the film again, but I don't remember it focusing on the guilt Regan might feel over her parent's divorce as a possible cause of the disturbances. All told, the Exorcist remains a stirring horror novel and the banter that Kindermann stirs up is not to be missed.
