Boy, this one was fun. This book felt like a worthy homage to the Andromeda Strain with some whispers of Crichton’s style, but the author is delightfully skilled and writes characters beautifully and makes these whispers feel like a tip of the hat rather than an attempt to copy. The dialogue is believable and witty and wonderfully unique for each character, and the plot carries you along with wonderful pacing.

One of my favorite reads this year.

This is a science-fiction story about a fungus; a really scary fungus. The fungus hitched a ride to the Australian Outback where it decimated a tiny town and caught the attention of the United States. Scientists from the US are sent to take care of the fungus, and they do but some thirty years later the fungus has found a way out of its storage chamber. What ensues is a fun, action-packed adventure involving a motorcycle gang, a retired scientist, and a single mom.

I really enjoyed this book. I do not typically enjoy science fiction books because I invariably feel stupid for not "getting" the science, but in this book I did not have that problem. I know just enough Biology to know the basics but not enough to question the mechanics of sci-fi. The characters were fun and realistic. The setting maybe contributed to my enjoyment of the story as it is set in and near Kansas City, which is where I'm from originally. The concept of the story was new and fresh and fast-paced. I really enjoyed this.

A super deadly fungus has escaped containment and everything rests on the shoulders of a retired agent and two part time security guards. This book moves super quick as most of the plot takes place over just a few hours, with the last few chapters being just minutes. If you are looking for a quick action story this is a good one-nice and fun but still leaves you something to think about once it’s over.

The story is quite basic but fun. The jokes land, the action is believable, but the tension rises to a certain point and just plateaus all the way to the end.

picked this one up because of the upcoming movie casting — joe keery, I love you — and it exceeded expectations! I really enjoyed myself while reading and, despite being a fungus-zombie-adjacent story that we’ve all seen before, the characters were refreshing enough to keep it new (to me they were, at least). travis and naomi forever <3

Many thanks to Ecco for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review

It hit all the right beats and was fascinating and creepy but I wasn't totally paying attention whoops.

I'm not usually a big sci-fi fan, but I love David Koepp's books.  This one is about a dangerous fungus that is virtually unstoppable.  Roberto and Trini work for the U.S. government as bioterror experts.  They track down a strange and deadly fungus that came from space in Australia in an aboriginal village.  When they arrive, all members of the tribe are dead.  After working to contain the fungus, they bring it back to the US to securely store it at the underground storage facility where Travis (Teabox) and Naomi work.  They notice an alarm going off in the walls.  Upon tracking it down, they find out that there is another level that no one knew about.  They go down to investigate and find that some green slime is coming out around the door and through the lock.  The fungus was supposed to be secure, but there is no containing something that is set on taking over.  This on your edge novel is going to be released as a movie in 2025.  You won't want to miss this.

(2.5) a fun premise, well-written and paced with a lot of promise, but the characters are just walking cliches in the worst way and the romance is god-awful - i'm so mad that he literally stalks her and there's just.. no repercussions? they end up together anyway? this is the worst trope ever and i'm sick of it being a thing. everything else is really cool, especially the approach to the fungus and how its mutations and spread is narrated, but i just can't give it a higher rating (3 or even 4 stars) because of aforementioned 'romance.' why can't we just have nice things
