Four young vagabond orphans, brought together by the pain and suffering, travel the Mississippi River to escape the horrors of the Lincoln Indian Training School in the midst of the Great Depression. If you like stories packed with friendship, hope, and interesting characters, you’ll enjoy This Tender Land. It’s a lovely mix of story and place, and just the right read for a summer evening.

This novel was wonderful and so full of heart! It's about 4 orphans who (after fleeing the abuses of on their native American boarding school) get in a canoe and embark on a life-changing journey... meeting a whole bevy of characters and places weathered by the Great Depression. Definitely one of the best books I've read all year!
