Some books just capture the art of story-telling. This was definitely one of those books.
Just listened to this one again, some hard themes, but a beautifully written and read story.

A beautiful, modern epic that I will think about for a long time. Also, should I buy a harmonica?

Many thanks to Atria Books for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review
Another thanks to Recorded Books for sending me an Audio CD in exchange for an honest review
Ask me, God's right here. in the dirt, the rain, the sky, the trees, the appls, the stars in the cottonwoods. In you and me, too. It's all connected and it's all God. Sre, this is hard work bu it's good work because it's oart of what connects us to this land. This beautiful, tender land."
When I saw that this book had an average of 4.6 stars on Goodreads and that all of my friends had rated it five stars, I thought No way. It's too good to be true. and it was. Sort of...
So, what's this book about?
1932, Minnesota—the Lincoln School is a pitiless place where hundreds of Native American children, forcibly separated from their parents, are sent to be educated. It is also home to an orphan named Odie O’Banion, a lively boy whose exploits earn him the superintendent’s wrath. Forced to flee, he and his brother Albert, their best friend Mose, and a brokenhearted little girl named Emmy steal away in a canoe, heading for the mighty Mississippi and a place to call their own.
Over the course of one unforgettable summer, these four orphans will journey into the unknown and cross paths with others who are adrift, from struggling farmers and traveling faith healers to displaced families and lost souls of all kinds. With the feel of a modern classic, This Tender Land is an enthralling, big-hearted epic that shows how the magnificent American landscape connects us all, haunts our dreams, and makes us whole.
As I said earlier, I was really worried this book was being overhyped and it turned out that it both was... and wasn't. This book was not five stars amazing but it was still very enjoyable. I just kept waiting for something to push this book up to five stars but that something never came sooo four stars.
I don't usually gravitate towards historical fiction because... full disclosure... I usually find it very boring. Fortunately, this book was the exact opposite of boring. It hit the ground running and kept me engrossed until the very end.
Overall, this book wasn't mind shatteringly amazing but I still really enjoyed it. It was a great coming of age story that I recommend everyone check out!

Breathtakingly beautiful in language and storyline. Embark on a journey of self discovery with vines of friendship that illustrate family doesn’t always mean blood. A truly captivating read with the depth of characters and landscape emanating far beyond finishing the book.

This book made me feel so many emotions but all worth it when I finished the book. It's so wonderful I cried my heart out on several chapters. The ending did not disappoint and it was worth all the heartache I endured. I consider this book a gem and something I'd definitely wanted to share with people if asked on what book I recommend that will change their lives. A book about hope, faith and love like never before. I hope this will be turned into a movie soon.
