🤔🤔🤔

I knew I was in for a weird time because I saw the movie adaptation in theaters before I knew it was a book. The book is just as weird and perplexing, if not more. I'm not interested enough to continue with the series, but I might try some other books by the author.

Maybe if my Intro to Bio class in college was taught with scary monsters like this I wouldn't be failing.

This was weird. And I guess that’s the point of it. It wasn’t as eerie and haunting as I thought it would be, but it definitely had both those tones in a mild way. I have so many questions and I think this book will plague my thoughts for a long time.

Years ago, something that is called "The Event" occurred that caused changes to an area that isolated it from the remainder of the country (the book doesn't specify what country). The area then started to be called Area X. Since "The Event", 11 missions were sent into Area X to try to study it. Most members of the missions never returned. The members of the 11th mission did return. But they were changed. And they all soon died of cancer.  A 12th mission is organized. The members are trained and sent into Area X. The members are a psychologist, a biologist, an anthropologist, and a surveyor (the names of the members are never used). A 5th member, a linguist, dropped out at the last moment. The recording of what occurred in the 12th mission was told in the first person by the biologist. Her husband was a member of the 11th mission. A lot of interesting things happened. I enjoyed the book a lot. It made me think. This book is the 1st of 3. I will definitely be reading the 2nd and 3rd books.

Went into this book knowing I wouldn’t get any answers and therefore I was able to enjoy this wonderful, weird experience. Usually not a fan of scenery descriptions but the writing and/or biology perspective certainly made it more interesting. Throughout I was speculating along with the biologist (and at some point, hallucinating with her too, reading one of my ideas into it and realising later I misread) and formed many theories that may or may not be true. Very intriguing.

This book is the kind of book that makes you stop, ask yourself “what the heck did I just read”, and reread the sentence. I mean this in the best possible way. Annihilation is such a mind-bending story.
