I really enjoyed this one. The characters were fun, the adventure straight forward, the writing funny. My only complaint being it was too short, some of the scenes went by entirely too fast and a lot of the travelling in between scenes was cut out, that they sort of just appear in the next place. For a fantasy novel I rather have all the travelling written out so the world is really build out and full.

Lovely prose, not much of a plot, no meaningful character development. Buehlman does a fantastic job of narrating the audiobook. Felt a little too much like a d&d campaign for my tastes. I probably won't read the next one.

Some books you just enjoy the hell out of, and this was such a book for me. To be fair, I think I knew I'd love this book when I read the blurb, because fantasy team-ups and scoundrels in over their heads are two of my favorite things. But the Blacktongue Thief delivered on both of those and then some.

The prose here is fantastic; if you've ever asked yourself "what if Joe Abercrombie was snarkier and wrote in first person" you'd get somewhat close to the voice in BT. Kinch is hysterical and lets you know exactly how he feels about a given person or situation (both are usually "shyte.") It's rare for me to laugh out loud when reading a book, but about once a chapter this book elicited at least one chortle or guffaw.

The magic in this fantasy world falls into a nice Goldilocks zone; not so "hard magic" that it feels more like an alternate set of physics and becomes overly explained, not so "soft magic" that you have no idea who is capable of what and the plot seems to happen in ways the reader doesn't understand. Kinch knows just enough magic himself that he can tell when he's outclassed. The rest of the book is so tightly-written that when something funky happens, you know magic is afoot and you are just happy to be along for the ride.

If you care about competently-written female characters (and you should), I'm happy to say that BT has them too. Without getting into spoilers, there are several ladies that are doing their own thing here instead of blindly following or opposing whatever the protagonist has going on. Women seem to be just as capable of swinging a sword or slinging a spell as Kinch. In fact almost all of them are better than him at one or both of those. I'd love it if we get to see the world through one of their eyes in future books. Speaking of future books, I dearly hope we get more of this series. This world and these characters are too good for it to all end here.

If you like snark, spells, swords and several different-sized fantasy creatures (goblins? giants?), this is where it's at. To me, this was a perfect blend of classic fantasy tropes (adventuring parties? strange wizards?) with modern sensibilities and vulgarities. If you want to read a story where a brave knight hacks someone's head halfway off, but also one where that knight's compatriot pisses themselves from the sight and laments how much blood actually comes out when you hack someone's head halfway off, you're twisted. But you're also in the right place.
