Despite the low rating, this story is interesting. At times, I found the story lovable and inspiring, and altruistic. At other time, I found it a drudge, cruel, and fraught with mental illness. The beginning of the story was very fascinating but as the story went on, it became more and more fanciful with finally an anticlimatic ending. It would be like Forrest Gump ending with the end of his cross-country run.

I was excited to read this novel as I thought the synopsis was really interesting but after finishing it, I found it to be just okay. The premise sounds great and all but it kind of just fell flat for me. It is a little sad with Harold losing his son and Queenie dying but the reason for his pilgrimage did not have that big reveal effect on me. And I am glad that Harold and Maureen found their way back to each other but I keep saying that so many problems could be avoided if people just talked to each other and honestly say what they felt but then there wouldn't be novels if that was the case.

I quite enjoyed this. After reading a few literary novels, this prose was refreshingly simple, and the characters were loveable.  The portrayal of a marriage that had slowly withered away through silence and a lack of vulnerability was shown realistically, but not in a way that made you feel hopeless or depressed. Instead, you empathised with the characters. Still, I didn't fall in love with the characters the way I wanted to. Maybe it was the simplistic writing style, but I just found there was a barrier between the reader and the characters. The star of the novel was the descriptions of the nature and places that Harold walked through. They were absolutely stunning and kept me reading when I was tempted to give up.
