I received an ARC and Iā€™m leaving an honest review.

Andrew is not capable of writing a bad book.

When I read Hell Followed With Us it immediately became a new favorite, but now The Spirit Bares Its Teeth has surpassed it a million times over and I'm kind of shocked. I feel like the writing and content has clearly matured from the first book and I love that. It did also make this a little heavier and darker read, at least for me, compared to Hell Followed With Us (which was already heavy enough with all the religious trauma lol).

I admit I got a little lost with the names of the girls at the school in the beginning, but I started to get them after a while.

I could perfectly see this story as a tv show and I honestly hope it gets an adaptation someday in the future.

Representation: autistic bisexual trans boy mc, trans woman li, sapphic secondary characters, autistic secondary character.

Content Warnings: ableism, deadnaming, transphobia, gender dysphoria, misogyny, gaslighting, gore, animal death, detailed medical procedures, medical content, injury detail, rape, child abuse, pedophilia, blood, murder, torture, violence, sexual violence, confinement, forced institutionalization, pregnancy, child pregnancy, gory 'homemade' abortion (sorry I don't know how to describe it), mention of miscarriage, mention of self-harm and suicide attempts, vomit, religious bigotry.

A wonderful story, with a lot of horror and gore. Itā€™s a bit slow for the first half of the book, but itā€™s important for the overall story unlike some other writings. Already want a sequel, or something to expand the world of the story.

Read For:
Ghosts
Hurt/Comfort
T4T (ftm x mtf)
Dark Queer Rage
Gothic Victorian Vibes

Absolutely beautiful in a dark and vicious way.Ā  It was heavy and uncomfortable but in a way that made you want to fight for the characters in the pages.Ā  Drawing you in with each chapter.

The trans representation in this book might not have been the happiest Iā€™ve ever read but even though all the angst and hurt there were moments of comfort, of happiness and hope.

Silas was such a lovable main character.Ā  I liked his passion for being a surgeon, trying and fighting for what he wanted even when nearly everyone failed him, time and time again.Ā  Daphne was such a light in his life and to this book I couldnā€™t imagine it without her.Ā  Again a very lovable character.

This book was not soft or lighthearted and I definitely suggest reading the content warnings beforehand; but this book was written so well.Ā  The setting, the plot, the characters, even the cover of this book was amazing.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author/publisher for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Horror isnā€™t a genre I normally read, but this book? If you donā€™t like horror, but you enjoy stories where the abused get their revenge then this will definitely suit you.Ā

This book features an autistic trans-boy who is being forced to present as a girl. Thereā€™s an exploration of the Victorian obsession with death and the spirit world, and what would happen if spirits could be weaponised. But the real horror in this story isnā€™t the supernatural, itā€™s the awful things human beings do to one another while claiming to be good and nice. Thereā€™s a lot to unpack here but the author does an excellent job of showing this abuse without it seeming gratuitous.

I really enjoyed this story, which I received as an ARC from Peachtree Teen on Netgalley.Ā

This book was a beautiful, gory, well-written story about what men in power will do to get what they want, and those who have to suffer because of their whims. It was a fantastic second novel and is, in every way, a perfect successor to Hell Followed with Us while still managing to be unique and tell its own story. I loved every second and I am immensely grateful to Peachtree Teen for the ARC.Ā
