This seems (maybe) better written than 天涯客 Faraway Wanderers, though I'm not sure. priest seems to have a problem with not writting proper endings, but here it's more understandable and less bad than in 天涯客 since it's a prequel to that novel. Beiyuan and Wu Xi were my favourite side characters in 天涯客 so I like this book but I again feel like priest comes up with wonderful characters but doesn't work on executing them properly, in a way that would be emotionally fulfilling and satisfying.

Palace dramas and politics are really not for me. Interesting exploration of morality and the cost of "the ends justify the means" for the greater good. Wu Xi is a freak and I love him
