I would have liked this book to spend more time in the dancehalls- I thought there was going to more focus on the music of the time, the jazz, the swing and the Brixton/Soho music scene. Characters feel true to the time period, in the way they think, the actions they take. It’s an oppressive world. A little pulpy melodrama.

Really enjoyed Lousie Hare's mystery set in the Empire Windrush arrival era. Didn't figure out what had happened until the end! Some nice period details and history (some of it quite disturbing) from this time period. Well worth the read and I believe she has a new (third) one out soon.
