Starting as many such stories do, with a loving family moving into a grand house and spiralling into otherworldly madness, Faerie Tale is in many ways a fairly standard Fae horror. Its more fantastical elements cover similar ground to American Gods or Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, without any of the flair of Gaiman or Clarke's later magnum opera. And its more mundane elements are, well, mundane.

I did nearly drop it near the climax, when a child did some decidedly unchildlike things, but past that point is blessedly the best of the book, and enough to rescue an otherwise dull read from the one-star treatment. Feist is one of my very favourite authors, so I'm glad for that!
