Frankenstein Underground allows Mignola a chance to play around with what is clearly one of his favorite characters, deepening the Hellboy mythos considerably while telling a story that is completely new. Mignola's version of Frankenstein's monster is a tragic figure, a wounded monster who has spent many years on the run after being hunted and exploited by humans (a journey which allows him to cross paths with Hellboy, making this technically a sequel to Hellboy: House of the Living Dead). Finally, he is given a chance to be a hero and atone for his sins, but not before dealing with witches, occult societies, and the return of one of the Mignolaverse's best villains.

This was such a good story. I love the way that Mignola ties all these different stories and people into the Hellboy world. Its so entertaining and he hardly ever goes astray. Great art as well.

This volume follows a Frankenstein monster from Hellboy In Mexico as he...you know what, it doesn't matter. Mike Mignola is one of the coolest idea men in comics, and an amazing artist. But most of the best work in the Hellboy Universe comes when Chris Roberson, John Arcudi, Joshua Dysart, or other writers work with him to add some humanity, and interesting dialog.

This might as well be a Ben Stenbeck art book. After the second chapter, I found myself tuning out mid-word balloon, and had no interest in where the story was going. But the art is spectacularly beautiful.

I recommend this to Mike Mignola completists, Ben Stenbeck fans, people who shell out ten bucks for every - I Said Every Goddamnit - Frankenstein movie ever made, people who want to know where the vril comes from, and fans of 1980s action movies where the villains monologue themselves to death.

More of a 3.5-star story, but it fits interestingly into this universe, and was fun to read.

Series: Frankenstein Underground #1-5
Rating: 3 stars - I liked it

Frankenstein’s monster has been on the run since he was created. After years of running he finds himself underground and eventually in the lost world of Hyperborea.

This was an interesting take on Frankenstein’s monster's life. He fights a demon-possessed sorcerer, makes friends with ghosts, and continues living his life in the center of the world. It was a good story and one that anyone can pick up and understand. You don’t have to read any of Mignola’s other books before reading this one.

The artwork is fantastic, like all of Ben Stenbeck’s work in the Mignolaverse. I do wish this story had a bit more depth than it had. It definitely felt like a repeat of previous stories of a strong character who is just beating up evil without much depth to it. I still liked it though.

I am a huge fan of Mike Mignola's work and this is no exception. The art is breathtaking and the story compelling.
