I really enjoyed the narration of this whole series. He pronounced some things a little strangely, but overall he was very good. I was particularly happy with his consistency of voices for all the characters.

As to the book itself, these are, and always will be, one of my favourite series of all time.

5 stars.

very much enjoyed this. felt the ending was a bit rushed and spent the whole book worrying that there wasn’t enough pages left for everything to happen, then it all of a sudden happened. the whole series was really very, comforting, like a hot drink and a warm bed on a cold day, like talking to a good friend. i’m so glad to have read this series on a recommendation and wished i could have found them earlier. and to the person who recommended it, you were in every page and this series is just so you. a very cozy little fantasy series that has become very dear to me and that i’ll no doubt revisit.

Ah that bittersweet feeling when you reach the end of a good book and a great series. I will truly miss reading these books for the first time. What more can I say about these novels that I have not yet said? They’re too damn short! Okay, I did already say that, but it is worth repeating. I feel like Eddings could have done so much more, some of the characters and some of the relations deserved more development, more time in the spotlight. Maybe the Mallorean will satisfy my hunger, if I can get my hands on it. These books are very hard to find around here. So that’s it, that is really the only bad thing I can say about these books. They are very enjoyable. I laughed out loud several times, the world in which they are set is much bigger and richer than I had originally assumed and I loved how Eddings managed to visit each and every single land he created without hindering the story. Great characters, great story, great everything. I’m usually not so fond of prophecies but Eddings had an original take on this which both surprised and delighted me. It had a great ending and I was especially pleased to see an epilogue. I don’t like too sudden endings and these two extra chapters dotted some i’s that needed it. I highly recommend it, definitely breached my top ten in fantasy series.

2022 Reread: Changed my rating to 4 stars, sadly. I still really enjoyed these books and they are very relaxing, but having grown as a human being and a reader, some of the dated stereotypes, especially around Gender roles really started to bother me this time around. I've also changed my opinion on that he "could" have developped some of the characters more to he "should" have. Upon reflection Garion and Ce'Nedra are grosely underdevelopped and are almost devoid of character growth and agency. This could have made an already great story just a whole lot better. In the final confrontation we are told that Ce'Nedra HAS to be present, yet she does not do anything at all, which sort of sums up how Eddings wrote her for the most part. The series is also split into the first three books which are the quest of the orb and the last two which are the confrontation with Torak and the former is quite a bit better than the latter.

Kind of weird that no one is bringing up the blackface scene.
