After all the cultural stereotypes and literal blackfaces, can't believe this is what actually makes me uncomfortable. This might be the first Asterix story that didn't tickle my senses, the way it was intended at least.

Unlike usual, the humor seems a bit too heavy handed and on the nose. Not to mention the blatant chauvinism and borderline stereotypical sexist portrayal of women. As well as making fun of feminist movements of the time. It is not just that they did it, but did so not quite artfully. There is not quite the usual satirical punch to the jokes.

The story is all over the place, with too many things being thrown around, all leading to a generic and not at all satisfying conclusion.

I'm giving it 2 out of 5 and recommend prospective readers to stay away from this version of the series.

Full disclosure, I grew up on this series so my opinion is necessarily biased.

I'm of the view that there is no such thing as a bad Asterix book ... but some volumes, like this one, are are pretty good.

This is one of the volumes that my library had in both English and French! As a child, I borrowed this in either language regularly. I think I borrowed both at the same time at least once to compare. As an adult, I still enjoy reading it, although I fully acknowledge the moral of the story is a bit muddy (everything in the village by necessity resets, ready for a new adventure).

Este es posiblemente el álbum de Astérix que peor ha envejecido. 32 años tiene y da auténtica vergüenza ajena leerlo a estas alturas.

A female bard with feminist ideals joins the Gaullish village, causing quite the upset to the male inhabitant. Meanwhile, Rome has a cunning plan to defeat the Gauls once and for all.
Some very clever and on-the-nose commentary about women's place in society.

These books are full of bright, fun and delightful characters who go on various adventures and get to beat up a bunch of Roman soldiers. Accompanying the story and the characters is a plethora of clever puns and word play that the translators should get a medal for. There are always a few gags or phrases in Latin that may mean nothing to the non-Latin speakers (such as myself) but Google can lend a helping hand there.
