It’s so clear when a writer writes a memoir. Safiya Sinclair poured her heart into this and I could feel all. She writes so beautifully and thank you to her for sharing her story with us.
Truly one of the best memoirs I’ve read.

Before listening to this book, I didn’t know anything about the Rastafari culture. I’d heard the term and just thought it was synonymous with Reggae music. Turns out it is so much more than that. Safiya grew up very oppressed by her father and this is her story of leaving the community she was raised in, finding her voice, and healing from her wounds.

There was a part in the second third of the book that was slow and I had a hard time being motivated to continue listening, but once that was over I was right back in her story.

This is being compared a lot to Educated and I can see why, although this is a very different story. However, if you liked Educated you will most likely be drawn to this one too.
