Disciplined by the Duke is the first book in the Lords of Discipline series. I really enjoyed this book. I was surprised that it was more of a slow burn than I thought it would be but matched the storyline and was an entertaining read. Because the MMC is honorable and has a rule of not bedding maids, there’s quite a bit back and forth between the MC of wanting but holding back. Once the opportunity is available though it proves it was worth the wait.
There’s treason, spies and somewhat of a mystery as to who the treasonous spy is but a lot of the what and the why are kept vague. This didn’t bother me though because it’s a romance first and enough information is given for plausibility. Some of the details in the subplot about Liz’ sister, is vague as well but just enough again to have a good idea what happened. However, her story is the next book in the series so her backstory may be explored more there.
The MC were likable and loved that the MMC was stern and gruff and while he did soften a bit for the FMC he overall stayed stern and gruff throughout. The FMC is best described by how Marcus described how his suitable duchess would be “…strong-willed and still not feel the need to express every emotion she feels as she feels it. Restraint and discipline in equal measure with passion.”
I also liked the writing around the discipline scenes. Most of the ones I’ve read with this kink (not a lot but enough to stick out) the way the reasoning for a discipline session is written comes off very cheesy. That was not the case for this one and thought it was done well.
There are four steamy encounters that include discipline and impact play.
