Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman tells the story of 17 year old Elio, who's father invites a guest to their home on the Italian Riviera every Summer to assist him with his paperwork. This year it is Oliver, an American, who is getting his book translated by a local into Italian.

What starts in the beginning with an awkward tour of his home, then develops into passion feelings with Elio for Oliver and, over the course of barely 6 weeks, they have a Summer romance filled with intimacy and obsession that takes them to the edge with a final few nights in Rome before Oliver returns home to the USA.

I appreciated this story with its flowing narrative that is tender and naked yet brutal and unsparing by turn.

I borrowed a copy of this book from Taunton Library and listened to it on cloudLibrary. I read this for prompt 41, a sticker on the cover, for the 52 Book Club Reading Challenge 2024.

The plot was basic but didn't take away from the story. I think it was written well too, and isn't too long of a read.

Tämä kirja herätti ristiriitaisia tunteita, koska kokemus jakautui pääasiassa kolmeen tunnetilaan. Kirja kertoo, kuinka yhtenä kesänä 17-vuotias Elio rakastuu itseään seitsemän vuotta vanhempaan kesävieraaseen, Oliveriin.

Kirjan alkupuoliskolla seuraamme Elion suorastaan pakkomielteistä ihastumista Oliveriin.

The writing was beautiful and atmospheric, and I really liked the last part of the book. Other than that, this book was just... meh. There was a lot of stuff that I found boring, and a lot of stuff that weirded me out. And for the most part, the love story didn't even feel like one.

"Call Me by Your Name" is a novel that speaks to me on many levels. I found the book to be a beautifully written exploration of the complexities of desire and identity, and was impressed by the skillful way in which the author wove together themes of love, loss, and self-discovery.
One of the things that stood out to me about "Call Me by Your Name" was the strength of its character development. The novel's protagonist, Elio, is a rich and multifaceted character whose emotional and sexual awakening is both relatable and deeply affecting. I appreciated the way in which the author allowed Elio's flaws and insecurities to be an integral part of his journey towards self-acceptance, and found his journey to be both poignant and thought-provoking.
In addition to its strong character development, I was also impressed by the book's lyrical and poetic prose style. The author has a gift for vividly evoking the sensory details of the Italian countryside, and her descriptions of Elio's inner thoughts and emotions are both powerful and deeply felt.
Overall, I found "Call Me by Your Name" to be a beautifully crafted novel that explores complex themes of love, desire, and self-discovery with empathy and nuance. It is a book that rewards close reading and careful attention to detail, and is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever struggled to understand their own feelings or find their place in the world.
