This is a high 3 stars, maybe 3.5-ish stars. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book and thought the writing and plot were both promising, but the pacing started to slow, and I never connected with all of the characters on the level that I would have liked to. As it progresses, the book starts to spread itself too thin. In trying to devote time to all of the characters, the threads that could have used more time and delivered more emotional heft are sold short. I think the author wanted it to feel as though each character received equal attention, but the reality is that there are some characters the reader is going to prefer to read about, and it's counterproductive to pretend otherwise.

The storylines for each of the characters tie up in a satisfying, realistic way (thought there is a late reveal regarding one that felt wholly unnecessary). Overall, a mostly feel-good read that leans towards forgettable but would be nice choice if you've got a free afternoon and a cup of tea.

DNF - 26th December 2023
Page 40.

The Authenticity Project has been on my radar for a long time and I finally picked it up thinking that it sounded like the perfect uplifting, lighthearted read for this time of year. However, while the premise is there the execution feels lacking. I probably could push through and enjoy parts of it, I don’t predict, at this point, that it would ever be above a 2.5 star read and I’m struggling to want to read it.

Reviews are mixed, a lot of them glowing so maybe I’m missing something wonderful. However, I just don’t think this book is going to give me, personally, what I’m after. I’m DNF’ing and moving on.

I enjoyed this book. It reminded me a lot of The Reading List as it’s about building a community. The idea of the project is really cool and I wonder if anything like this exists in the real world. All the characters were so deep and interesting in their own way. I think I’m most interested by Hazard and Alice’s stories. I wish Alice actually had more story but that may be since she was introduced later in the book. Monica was kind of annoying to me. For someone that’s all about caring for others it didn’t make sense for her to be so wrongly mad without knowing more about Hazard. I am glad that Monica didn’t end up with Riley, definitely not on same page. And the Mary plot twist literally made my jaw drop!

Thoroughly enjoyed! I don’t know how to review without spoilers (I’ll try!)

The Authenticity Project is so intriguing and intricate that I’m finding it hard to review it without giving anything away.

It’s a lovely take on “six degrees of separation,” the joy of synchronicity, the beauty of newfound friends, and what it means when we say you need to truly be honest with yourself before you can be honest with anyone else.

Pooley’s characters become real and multi-dimensional from the outset, drawing you into their world, their journey, and into your heart.❤️

Some parts were delightful and captivating, others a little slow. But glad I read it mostly for the premise and the importance it highlights about honesty and openness.
