My favorite Chekhov play I think, and definitely the most hopeful one - although there still remained one discordant little note at the end. I think the reason that I liked this one so much is partially because there is this sense of quiet hope and acceptance and understanding that people fall into their old flaws, but things will turn out alright anyways. But it could also be because I read about it in Douglas Smith's Former People and I loved the analysis then.

This is also the only Chekhov play in which reading moved me to tears. Though it was the most original of all his plays, it still followed what I can only describe as Chekhovian plot beats. I swear it makes sense.

This is the last Chekhov I will be reading for a while, since I'm all Chekhoved out. Lovely way to end it and I hope that I will be able to see this play live someday.

Chekhov writes our most tender and intimate moments, as if under a microscope; in full bloom, that we ourselves are thrown into longing and reminiscence.
