a somewhat disjointed eco-parable that starts strong but begins to confuse itself through the tenuously connected timelines - peculiar plotting but gorgeously written

I had high expectations for this novel but something was missing for me, there was no distinguishable likability in any of the characters, I also found various plot holes in the writing which was confusing. I was actually just confused and pissed off for the entirety. I thought maybe it was the way the book was with its time travelling/body transforming antics, but in the end I think it was just bad writing.

It was like reading three short stories that got tossed into a blender which was then unceremoniously dumped into a novella, and maybe some of it got left in the blender. You're not quite sure if you care though because the pieces that ended up in the novella were good enough, and the blender did an excellent job of blending them anyway. Mostly. Also, I think I mentally uttered "Huh, it went there..." more than three times.

The story was very interesting, but I enjoyed reading it less because of all the homophobic (etc., etc.) language used by one of the main characters. TW:
Spoilerhomophobia, transphobia, rape, underage prostitution...

This is a short book but I still couldn't bring myself to finish it. I loved the opening chapter, but soon after I began to lose track of what was going on. I have no doubt I lost a lot of nuance and meaning due to my lack of knowledge about the politics and history of the Dominican Republic (although I did Google a lot whilst reading it to try and understand it) - that's on me. But still, it was confusing to a degree that I just found tiring. By page 80 I felt I was understanding around 5% of what was going on, so I couldn't see the point of continuing. I usually enjoy weird books, but this one was beyond me. I really wanted to like it, but in the end I simply didn't find it rewarding.

I was looking for some nice feel good speculative climate fiction and this definitely was not it (apocalyptic in the blurb should have been a clue) but I still enjoyed this book a lot, took me a bit of work to get into it but enjoyed it in the end. Quite a strange experience.
