I watched the TV adaptation of this as a kid, and I was keen to find out if it still held up to my modern adult sensibilities.

I think my biggest takeaway about this rollercoaster of emotional manipulation was that it could never happen like this today.. but only because of our completely different ways of learning and finding information.

This is based on evens that happened in the 60s, where an impulsive and highly passionate teacher bumbled into something awful because he didn't have the ability to predict what might happen. It seems obvious now, but then my understanding of things like this has been informed by stories like this.

This might be an interesting (if complex) topic or set of topics to tackle with a high-school-aged readership.
