This book is the definition of why editors are so important.

Perhaps it was just the kobo edition, but this book needed another good pass by both a content and copy editor. The first six or so chapters are rough, the author unsure of where to take the character to keep things interesting. There were MANY spelling, grammar, and punctuation typos, including "do2019n't" and the misspelling of her own kingdom name. It took me out of the book every time throughout the entire thing, and it was tough getting through the first six chapters.

Oh, but after that... Here's where the book shines. The MC is BISEXUAL. CANONICALLY. It's WONDERFUL. It's so good to see representation in books I love. There are tropes. You know them, you love them, and you've got them. There's unique mythology, unique magic, and the characters feel fleshed and real. Their chemistry feels a little forced, a little too rushed, but overall Blair gives us what we really want, and leaves us wanting more.

The story is compelling, even if the twists are easily predicted. Let's face it, we're not reading these for fancy plot twists or unusual endings. We're reading this because it's fast, it's sexy, it's emotional as hell, and it makes us feel good. And this book delivers all of that.

The story is there. The plot is there. But you can also see a new author as she works to find her voice. This book follows a king’s assassin as she starts to find who she is again and a purpose to live. A purpose to keep a promise she made years ago and learns how to trust in the world again.

Lots of world building in the beginning and the editing needs some work, but I really got into the story! I will definitely be continuing this saga!

I loved this book. It has all the best romantasy tropes (if you’re here you know what those are) but the FMC has a fully developed brain (@ all romantasy authors, was that so hard to make her a real adult without a creepy age gap??!!). It was a fun read and I’m definitely going to read the next one.
