Enjoyable, fun but with weirdly stereotypical depictions of ‘foreign’ characters (the book is truly USAmerican to the core), and dismissive of linguistic barriers. Suspension of disbelief runs at full capacity.
Andy Weir knows how to write only one MC
Spoilerbut thankfully Rocky is there to balance it!

I did like this book. The premise and core story are both very interesting, and should hopefully make a very good film. However, it gets increasingly tedious as the book goes on to read passages that feel like they are only there for the author to show off how much science they can science with

3.5, but I'd feel bad for giving it 3 stars. It was entertaining but there were some things that influenced my opinion on the book:

- It was just waaay too similar to The Martian. It felt like Weir plucked Mark Watney from Mars, put him on a spaceship, and told him to be more annoying.
- The way the narrator of the audiobook did female voices was ridiculous and insulting. I want to punch him.

Also, if I hear "after some quick back of the napkin math" one more time I'm going feral. You're smart, we get it.

To be honest, Rocky was the highlight of the whole book and I love him with all my heart.

Reread August 2021-

Audio listen this time. Fabulous narration and the story was every bit as engaging as the first time I read it! I loved the way they recorded Rocky's voice.

Still a strong contender for my favorite book of 2021. I can see myself rereading this many times.

really enjoyed this book. I do think it was maybe a slight bit too long because of unnecessary descriptions/science stuff. But altogether was very good. I really enjoyed the relationship development of Ryland and Rocky, and loved the ending of staying with Rocky and becoming a teacher again.

I will say there’s a large amount of like suspended belief here. Not because of aliens, but because of how Weir writes the world coming together to solve this problem. I think Covid, and climate change prove we just simply never would do that for each other.
