This book took me by surprise and I just adore it!

I read this book as part of the Dragons and Tea Book Club and am SO happy that I participated! This was an amazing story that I just fell head over heels for. I adore the main characters in this and how complicated they are. They are both really stubborn which I can relate to and are stuck in their way of doing things. But it was just so so good and I love it a lot. There is a slight sci-fi element to the story which I didn't think I would love; usually if I want sci-fi, I want a lot of it and not just a small amount. But the slight sci-fi element was the best part of the book for me! It really made this story for me and I just love this so so much. I think this is going to be a book that I think about and revisit in the future cause it is just so good and I need more!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone but especially someone who wants to read a contemporary story with a little sci-fi, complicated and realistic feeling characters, fantastic plot and pacing and just an overall very enjoyable story.

i really wanted to love this.

i was promised sci-fi and lesbians in space, but i got...neither of them. i didn't really care for any of the characters (except for james, but he was never in the spotlight), the romance was bland and not quite believable. the story was so unrealistic and silly at times, it was hard for me to take it seriously. i expected so much more, but i just got teenagers partying and drinking and being dumb.

maybe i should just stay away from YA as it clearly isn't my thing.

This was so beautiful and I may not recover. That’s not quite the right phrase but it’s the best I can do for now. K. Ancrum is exactly who we need in YA, just in literature in general tbh and side note her letters to us at the end are a balm to my soul. Thank you for being brave for those of us that aren’t quite there yet, I hope I make it there soon.

I feel like maybe I should give this book another chance because it had the poor fortune to be read by me concurrent to SA Chakraborty’s The City of Brass, but honestly, I don’t want to. I just wasn’t invested in the story, and I thought the beginnings of the relationships between Ryann’s crew and Alexandria were really problematic, to the point where it made me really uncomfortable. The plot just didn’t seem to flow with me, and I didn’t connect with any of the characters. I remember some people saying John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down had unrealistically poetic inner dialogue between the characters and I had disagreed. With this book, their outer dialogue tended to be overly poetic, especially near the end, and it was just not balanced out by an equally poetic inner dialogue. Most of the prose was pretty direct, and it almost felt out of nowhere that they started waxing poetic; it was jarring. I wanted to like it so much, but I didn’t.

I think this is one of my favorite books in terms of how all the characters, no matter if main or secondary, are built. These misfits, I loved them with all my heart. I wanted to know more about them, but above all... I wanted to protect them at all costs! <3

I'll be checking the Wicker King, from this author, because honestly? I can't get enough of her writing.
