First off, I LOVE THIS SERIES.

The world-building, the characters, the cultures, everything. Not only are the characters extremely diverse (in every way), they are also extremely well-developed.

What stood out to me the most, and what drew me in to begin with, are the female characters. They are so well-written. Marit, Zubaidit, Mai, Kirit, Priya, Miravia, Nallo, seriously the list goes on and I love them all in their own way. I am always looking for epic fantasy with great female characters, and this trilogy checked all of my boxes.

I could go on for a long time about this series, because I fell in love with it. This was also the first series by Kate Elliott that I have read, and I am so looking forward to reading everything else she has ever written.

If you enjoy slow-burn, multiple POV, epic fantasy series, read this trilogy.

I tried reading it long long long time ago and never got past the first chapter, which was frustrating 'cause I loved her Novels of the Jaran series and Spite Finished Crown of Stars. I was hoping maybe Crown of Stars was an aberration in her excellent writing.

So, I tried the audio book, which was annoying on a different level, but not of the author's making. I got most of the way through it, I could see the light at the end of the chapters! But when the audio book went back to the library, I didn't renew. Too much mystery, too much world at war, to many irons in the pot, no reprieve in sight. It meant going through a trilogy for even the smallest of resolutions. Maybe once I would have loved that complexity, now it was just frustration on frustration.

My main problem with this book : It's soooo slooow. And long. I'm not really sure about some characters role either. Take Keshad and Shai for example. Even if their plotline were reduced, I doubt the story would suffer that much. Maybe they're for sequel. *shrug*

Well, aside from that, I kinda like this book. The setting is great, some fantasy version of Silk Road and medieval Europe (they're neighbor apparently). And boy, those eagles are awesome.

This one is okay for me, but not recommended for someone with little patience, though.

Kate Elliott builds some great worlds and her characters are often great but this book was dense. I often felt bogged down with extra details that I cared nothing about. There were also very few clear chapter breaks and it felt like each chapter just ran on for way too long. She also could have cut down on the number of povs. There was one character that I basically skimmed his sections and I know I didn’t miss much. Also can someone tell me why there always has to be slavery of some kind in her books. It’s a bit of a turn off. At this time I will probably still continue because there were several characters I liked and the bad guy is still a mystery but I don’t have a the urge to pick it up right now.

Was very slow.  I dont mind a slow burn or heavy world building.  I love those things actually.  However this book never really seemed to go anywhere.  Lots of characters and subplots that dont seem to add up. I read over half of this big book but just didnt care about anything that was happening...or not happening.
