*Extremely long sigh* I made a mistake because I thought this was the final book, not the second in a trilogy. I read it thinking it was going to wrap everything up and ended up pretty disappointed. I was wrong!! That being said, I don't think Hell Bent hit it out of the park like I thought it would. There was so much action and (dare I say) extraneous plot devices that I got whiplash. This isn't the first time I felt that way with Bardugo's writing. I think it worked in Six of Crows, but not as much here. The darkness requires some sitting, some stewing. I think Bardugo needs to fully commit to the audience - is this adult? Mature YA? There's sexual violence, but no sexual autonomy or processing. There's physical and emotional violence, but it doesn't settle. There's urgency, but less understanding. Things aren't reckoned with. College kids don't always act like college kids, cops don't act like cops, people are just kind of...off? I wanted to sit more in the big moments and implications, but found myself getting rushed along despite the first ~300 pages dragging.

I'm giving this a 4 because I love the premise of the series, and I hope that Bardugo can pull it off with the final novel. There are SO many interesting things going on, and I think she can recapture the balance of the first book, answer the big questions, and actually explore power, class, racism, sexism, colonialism, and violence in academia.

another addition to the alex stern series and i’m not sure how entirely to feel about it — the book picked up near the end but i feel like it’s drifting further and further away from dark academia and into a newer magic-centric world (which there’s nothing wrong with — but it’s very different from how the first was set up).

the story starts off pretty slow in this book till about the 60% mark and then it races to the end — which has its ups and downs, thank you
darlington
for providing us with your too-few witty remarks <3 there were a few time-skip moments that didn’t weave together as seamlessly as i’ve seen done before, they felt a bit repetitive at times. the plot twists did in fact catch me a little by surprise which was nice! i’ll probably stick with the series moving forward just to see where it goes but it def has a few weaknesses i hope won’t evolve in the next addition!

Was considering a 4.5 at first but no -- it deserves the whole five. That destroyed me 🙃🙃🙃

Conflicted on what to rate this one, but overall I can say I enjoyed it. It definitely was an easier read than the first book given that the world building was out of the way - which made for a more gratifying reading experience. That being said, there was a lot that still confounded me - making for a pretty bumpy first 3/4 of the book, and a pretty solid last 1/4 of the book.

I think this book’s primary strength is in its ability to capture intense emotion and explore deep rooted histories/traumas, both of which helped to construct a very visceral reading experience. However, there were too many instances where the tone of a given scene would do a complete 180 - oftentimes throwing your focus off entirely, Additionally, while there were lots of intense and interesting moments, it felt as though there were too many ideas being crammed into the one book -
from the reintroduction of Darlington’s parents to their deaths pretty quickly after their introduction, to Michelle being a double agent, to Mercy for some reason now being part of the squad? It just felt like so much of it, frankly, didn’t make sense. Especially the ending - why have them go through all of that, closing off the passage between world only for it to suddenly still be open anyways?
All in all, good story and great investigation of the core casts’ character arcs, but definitely tried to take on a bit too much.

Wow. I thought Ninth House was good but this was just next level! I am so excited for the third book and conclusion to this series.
