I thought this was a strange, hypnotic tale. It's supposed to be a children's book, but the writing sounds more suited for older children or adults. Neil Gaiman pens great children's books, but this one almost begs to be expanded into one of his well known fantasy novels. It has great illustrations that pull you deeper into following along with the "instructions."

Neil Gaiman wrote a children's book?!

The author of [b:American Gods|30165203|American Gods (American Gods, #1)|Neil Gaiman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1462924585l/30165203._SY75_.jpg|1970226],[b:Coraline|17061|Coraline|Neil Gaiman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1493497435l/17061._SY75_.jpg|2834844], and [b:Anansi Boys|2744|Anansi Boys (American Gods #2)|Neil Gaiman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1479778049l/2744._SY75_.jpg|1007964] crafted this children's book with a summarized list of "instructions"/lessons that characters learn from fairy tale stories. It's a great book for children and adult children like me :P

One of my favorite lines were
Spoiler "...dragons have one soft spot, somewhere, always; hearts can be well-hidden, and you can betray them with your tongue..."

Basic instructions for life! This book gives good advice for any age with cool art that perfectly illustrates every piece. The fantastical elements add much oomph to it for me. I love this one and its little allusions to other literature and lore.

In many ways a love letter to fantasy adventures, Instructions delivers a guide for exploring the magical world hidden beyond "the wooden gate in the wall you never saw before." Echoing a wealth of classic tales, delivered in Gaiman's magical storytelling, and illustrated wonderfully by Charles Vess, this book is an adventure through lands of wonder which reminds us all:
Remember your name.
Do not lose hope--
what you seek will
be found.
