Reading this book: another superb Christmas tradition.

This was a book from my childhood that stayed with me and I read it to my 12yo daughter recently. It's such a beautiful story.

What a lovely, sweet story! Written for children, this follows the lives and choices of two children, who make terrible mistakes, come to know Christ, and then make right their wrongs. It's a little moralizing. But it presents the gospel so beautifully!

Read this aloud to my 10 year old (and the 13 year old listened in too). Somehow I missed all the Patricia St. John oevre when I was growing up (despite being raised in a conservative Christian home). So this was my first introduction to her work.

I would describe this title as a little bit like Heidi in some ways, but maybe that's just the Switzerland setting. Annette and Lucien are well crafted characters and you will want to see how their difficulties are resolved.

There were times when I thought the book was possibly over-doing it on the preachiness, but my 10 year old has declared it her "favorite read aloud" and maybe her favorite story ever. It is wholesome and lovely and therefore we both highly recommend it. (It has 26 chapters so if you start December 1 you could read one chapter a night leading up to Christmas and plan to finish the day after Christmas. Which is what we did except it turned out we couldn't wait so we had a bonus chapter Christmas night.)

I understand why the people who recommended this book to me like it, but it is just not for me

I read this aloud to my 9, 5, and 3-year-old boys. We all enjoyed it.

I loved this book so much! Sue Peterson's narration is excellent.

Own. Sister recorded as audio-book for the children.

We enjoyed listening to this book as a family. Please excuse any errors I make in spelling names.

The story of Lucien, Annette, and Danny was compelling and well told. The thoughts and motives of the children were explored in depth and clear. The obvious sin of Lucien; the not-as-obvious, easy to ignore sin of Annette; and Danny's selfishness were delved into, rooted out, and exposed to the light of the work of Christ.

The story, itself, had a plot that kept the listener listening - what will Lucien do? What will happen to Danny? How can change be wrought? We want to know what happens to the characters, they are sympathetically portrayed - even Lucien whose sin is so external.

This story was written for children, so change is made simple and possible. The theology, at times, was a bit misconstrued (Perfect love casts out all fear, but that doesn't get you over a mountain on foot in a blizzard, generally.) Our children were encouraged that even in their own sinfulness, they could be forgiven, welcomed, and changed.

Really, what more can we ask?
