Bit too short to really address anything in depth, but a good starting point.

pros:
- some interesting thoughts on where modern western misogyny comes from and its portrayal in ancient Greek and Roman texts like the Odyssey, Agamemnon and Lysistrata.
- also a look at how modern female politicians are treated and compared to their male counterparts, and the different types of power.
- also looked at how women tend to lower their voice or wear suits to fit in with men in power.

cons:
- Beard says in the afterword that further she would like to dig into how these power dynamics worked, etc. which I wish had been somewhat included in the text. She didnt really offer how things could be changed exactly, only that power should be reconsidered, not women.

overall, a good read, just wish it had been longer and had more depth!

Excellent writing, very interesting and thought provoking. My one critique is the tacked on afterword where she talks about what topics she would have liked to explore further - I would rather have read a more developed piece of work where those were fully explored. I understand it's just an effect of the way this was published by adapting two lectures, but I think it could have been more impactful and complete.

A good starting point into interesting feminist topics. I especially enjoyed the part of the "Public Voice" of women and how it's able to be related to ancient times. I greatly appreciated Beard's thoughts on the #MeToo movement at the end of the book and how she puts them into the bigger picture of the book. These are well written speeches and Beard herself acknowledges that they aren't as fleshed out as they could be but I wish they had been! The length they're now, it all just feels like a very long introduction.
