This series intrigued me a little when I first heard about it, but it's taken me a while to get around to starting it. The artwork is pretty, though I hadn't really read the description.

We meet Kotoko at the beginning, a girl who was kidnapped by yokai when she was young, and has to visit the hospital regularly for check ups. She has a crush on Kuro, a boy who also regularly visits the hospital, but she hasn't really talked to him until now. He also has an interesting connection to yokai that Kotoko is curious about.

I like Kotoko from the beginning. She's tiny, looks much younger than she is, but she's smart and she doesn't mind the scars she's earned to be where she is now. She's very upfront and shameless in the way she talks, and I appreciate that.

In the second half of the volume, we skip forward some, and we see what a different character has been up to. I'm intrigued to see where the next volume goes, given the switch of characters, and I like what I've seen so far.

In/Spectre is a graphic novel, which originally hit the shelves as a novel, and now has its own anime series. The story is quite unique and deals with the spirit realm, ghosts, kappas, and others. The heroine can see these beings and interact with them, but she is also their “god”.

What started as a promising read, quickly became a big flop. A lot of the panels are difficult to follow because they’ve been taken directly from the novel. What works in fiction doesn’t necessarily work in a visual medium. Sadly, the manga also had pacing issues. The second chapter looked out of place and was slow—I also felt like it missed the point.

A lot of the interactions between the characters are weird: 1) The heroine falls in love with a man she’s never actually spoken to (talk about being shallow). She just likes his looks and thinks she’s saved his life (which she hasn’t because he just tumbled into her).

2) The love interest’s girlfriend is older than him and the manga highlights this several times. The other characters can’t ever speak about him without saying “He has a girlfriend. She’s one year older than him.” Is it really so weird that a man has an older girlfriend in Japan? One year is such a huge deal?

But the worst thing! One of the ghosts died a painful death and has no face. Yet, the characters only focus on her chest. She has a “huge” chest. It’s not her missing, bloody face that’s the issue. No, her boobs. 100 cm. I actually googled that and that number says nothing because she could have 85B, which would still be a medium cup size.

Vol 1 was such a letdown. I loved the way the writer showed that disability isn’t a hindrance, and that you can still be a badass. The weird interactions and dialogue choices just ruined it for me. I’ll give this manga one more chance and read Vol 2 to see if anything has improved.

I feel like this was more of a 4.5 than a 4, but I'm rounding down because I want to see where this leads. The start was a little slow going, but as soon as our two main characters met then the plot really started. This manga is about a girl who can see yokai and a boy who yokai are afraid of. I see this being a slow-burn ghostly, demon-y, type of manga. And it will have just a touch of romance!!

I'm here for it, and I can't wait to read more of the series.

Happy Reading!!

This manga starts out alright. The artstyle is quite pretty and the plot seems easy to follow so far. I think the main character is adorable and the monsters/ghosts/yokai shown so far are pretty cool!

Just a bit scary how the MC is trying to force her love interest to be with her (strange vibes there) and I didn't really like where the first volume ended. Still, I'd like to continue reading the series.

I'm reviewing all the volumes I've read so far (about 5). This is a good series in that it made me want to keep reading by presenting questions I wanted answered. However, I didn't like the love triangle/high school insecure relationship stuff. I thought the series would be part romance, but after reading some other reviews on it, I realized its not really that. So, I'm not sure why the first pages introduce the story by showing Kotoko having a crush on Kuro. I would have just left that bit out and focused on the yokai elements and shown the love triangle later. I can see why the high school-ish relationship hits home for others who are actively experiencing similar situations in their own lives, though. I'm not in that age bracket anymore, so girls quibbling over a guy just bugs me at this point in my life. (Honestly, it bugged me in high school, too!) Also, this was a novel that was made into a manga, so I'm not sure it translates super well. The manga explained in dialogue what should have been explained through action. I got tired of reading heavy, complex explanations. But its got to be hard writing a manga for a novel! The author would have had to deviate quite a bit from the original to show in action what was probably explained more cohesively through dialogue in the book.

I didn't really get the story, but the art was cute and the protagonist was really interesting.

Oh, this is such a fun story!

We’ve got 17-year-old Kotoko, who acts as a kind of medium between spirits and yokai and the human world. She gained this ability when she was a child, in exchange for one eye and her leg. She walks with a cane which she can wield like a bay when necessary. (So we’ve got a disabled protagonist who is a bad*ass. Heck yeah!) When Kotoko is not mediating between worlds, she is fawning over the handsome Kuro, who kindly visits his cousin in the same hospital Kotoko visits weekly for her check-ups. The only thing in their way — Kuro’s beautiful, bright, and ambitious girlfriend, Saki.

But, just when Kotoko is beginning to think all hope is lost, Kuro and Saki break up. It comes put of nowhere and all of the regular nurses can’t help but speculate what happened. When Kotoko finds her nerve and finally confronts Kuro about the break up, she learns that there may just be more to Kuro than meets the eye. There may be something deeper, darker about this handsome young man. Something that scares not only beautiful, loving girlfriends but even yokai and ghosts away from him.

If you like ghost stories and mysteries with an added air of forbidden/unrequited(?) romance, then this may be the story for you~

I'm not entirely sure what I think about this, actually! I'm just intrigued enough to give the second volume a shot, but I'm not sure how things are going to come together. I enjoy that the protagonist is disabled though, and not limited by her prosthetic.
