The premise of moving cities is absurd, but I feel like that makes the points of the book in regards to how "civilized" capitalist society treats the down trodden to feed a never stopping engine of economy a stark allegory for modern life.

We could stop killing each other, burning the world down, and exploiting untold masses, and yet we fight and claw for every natural resource to feed the whims of a few at the top in control.

The book is much darker than the movie, particularly in the final chapters. It also has more time to explore the themes of the world.

Started reading this because I wanted a nostalgia hit, thinking it would be a blast back to my childhood. Ended up questioning everything at 1:15 at night. Highly recommended if you like grimdark/dystopia.

So they killed a character towards the end of this book ,
killed the dog
and I could tell it was meant to be an big emotional moment, but then I asked my self "What did this character do before this? Why does their death matter? Why did their action matter again?" And I couldn't really answer any of these. Then they killed more characters, and I just asked the same questions again, with the same lack of answers. I'm pretty sure the book would have ended roughly the same without the actions of our two main characters, or even our 5 or so side characters.

The world has become a wasteland and cities have become mobile in order to survive. In the past, the landscape was salvaged but now that resources are running low, cities have started relying on each other to survive. And not in a wholesome cooperative kind of way. Larger cities chase down and eat smaller cities (which at least have the advantage of speed) in order to survive.

I don't know if it's just a me thing, but it almost felt like there was a bit of a mismatch between the writing style and the contents of this book. The writing felt more like what you typically find in books for younger teens, while the contents themselves were rather grisly. I loved the world building though. It's a very unique idea and I'm definitely interested in learning more about it, even if everything else was far more simplistic than I expected it to be. I haven't decided if I will continue the series yet, but the world its set in is definitely its strong point.
