There are heavier parts of the book but the author keeps those sections very tight to ensure that it doesn’t impact the light tone of the overall book and they seem well placed in the story / by the time you read them you see them coming so it isn’t overwhelming despite the content. It’s very thoughtful story telling.

At first the amount of perspective can feel a bit overwhelming but if you imagine if while you’re reading it, it’s a who done it tv show where we get to see the others perspectives it actually become cohesive quite quickly.

The Thursday Murder club is a cozy mystery book following a group of septuagenarians in a nursing home who have formed a book club and subsequently find themselves in the middle of an actual murder case.
The first half of the book was a little too slow for me and because of some references and meanderings of how the characters talk/narrate it took me some time to get used to the writing. Halfway through the book though I found myself enjoying and trying to guess who the murderer was.

The voice was great, but the motives were kind of thin and there was gratuitous suicide. I probably won’t read the others in the series.

Richard Osman had a promising debut with The Thursday Murder Club. The cast of primarily elderly characters was so far removed from any characters I've read before, but I was entranced by every member of the main 'gang' and loved getting inside their minds as the mystery unfolded.

My biggest issue with the book was its length: I felt it could have been 50-100 pages shorter. There were too many turns and red herrings and, at times, a total lack of trust in the reader to follow along without shoehorning in a new character's perspective to over-explain a point.

There were also frequent mentions of a character's weight and calorie consumption. I understand this as a plot device if it's essential to a book, but it felt completely unnecessary in this case.  This is a personal trigger that wouldn't bother everyone, but I think it's worth mentioning.

Overall though, it was a really fun listen. I've been told this series gets better as it goes on, so I'll definitely keep the rest of the series in my audiobook library for future listening, and I look forward to seeing how Osman's writing has developed!
