I really appreciate seeing Hopkins's faith and love of nature, his rhythms are interesting and language choice bold - but, frankly, I have no idea what most of this is saying and it feels somewhat impenetrable!

The 2nd Little Black Classics book is a collection from Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins.
.
It reminded me as to why I’m not a reader of poetry as it’s subjective and usually needs proper analysis - I had no idea what he was writing about most of the time.
.
The exception to this was for the few journal entries at the back of the book, in which Hopkins writes about clouds and trees an awful lot.
.
I think one other Goodreads reviewer summed the whole thing up better than I ever could:
“This short selection of poems and journal entries made me want to drink so much gin.”

So beautiful and cleverly written that my unaccustomed brain couldn't take it. That means, I thought I knew English until I had to take three reads before understanding one of these poems, I was taking too long. Someday I'll come back to this.
