As a PhD student, a woman, and someone who can get very angry about inequality, this book touched a very specific part of my soul. It was creative, smart, and unique. I have never read anything like it.

And I thought [b:Radicalized|41447687|Radicalized|Cory Doctorow|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1547668215l/41447687._SY75_.jpg|64697126] was kind of dark. This book was brutal but not just for the violence. To be fair most of the book was not very violent but the pages that were made up for it. I didn't buy the time travel mechanism but the story didn't necessarily hang on my believing in the mechanism - in reality it was better than most time travel mechanisms. The book had an almost entirely female cast, and that was definitely part of the hook for the plot and it absolutely worked. This is not an upbeat book. Don't read it looking for something uplifting.

Great overall book, fast paced action that truly gets you hooked and wanting to read more.
The premise behind it is very well developed with the potential to span multiple books (hopefully, I would gladly return to the universe). Very well defined characters, great plot twists.

I really liked parts of this book, especially if the time travelling back to 1992 and the stuff about Beth being a teenager around that time with the punk movement. The idea of time travel and the machines was interesting. But it wasn't enough to keep my interest and then gave up three-quarters of the way through.
