The first half genuinely intrigued me and was as much a love note to books in general, as it was an interesting fantasy novel with a real world protagonist. However once it goes, inevitably where you know it's going to go, it really dips in quality and the protagonist, Bastian, becomes intensely unlikable.
That being said, the best parts of this novel are the crazy array of species and characters.
I imagine if this was the first fantasy novel you ever read it may offer more interesting an adventure but for me it was an inconsistent fantasy epic so close to Princess Bride in style, yet so far off in quality.

I personally think this book would have been better if it was a series of novellas. It seemed that I would read a chapter and expect it to be over, even though I was only 50 pages in. It was almost like it was… neverending. I only really read this because I wanted to find out what happened. I wasn’t really a huge fan of the writing style and honestly, I spaced out while reading this.

I have read this book twice: once as a teenager and the second time a few months ago.
The book has so many layers and dimensions that I think it will take several more readings to capture them all.
On my second reading I espacially noticed the story of a person wishing to change, but when given the opportunity, loses their identity and past. So much to think about!

I've only ever read the german original and I absolutely adore it.
I almost feel like there are so many simple yet important life lessons woven into the story in such a subtle way, the big intended one to be revealed in the end seems a bit lacking.
Nevertheless, it is one of the most gorgeous books I've ever read and it surprises and delights me whenever I reread it.
