Як умру, то поховайте / Мене на могилі, / Серед степу широкого, / На Вкраїні милій.The only poem of Shevchenko's that I'd previously read was «Заповіт» (in various translations). I can read Ukrainian, thanks to having studied Russian, but I have the approximate fluency of a newborn rabbit. I've spent the past couple of days reading through the 13 poems in the «В казематі» series, in Ukrainian as well as a handful of translations. It's good stuff; Taras Shevchenko is one of the if not the most famous and beloved of Ukraine's poets, and I can definitely see why. The combination of bitterness, sorrow, and deep love in his poetry is breathtaking.
My favourite poem of his (of which Nataliya has coincidentally recently posted an excerpt) is almost certainly «Мені однаково...», written in May 1847 in St. Petersburg:
Мені однаково, чи буду«Російський військовий корабель, іди нахуй...» I don't want to, and won't, blame ordinary people for the actions of their government. So understand what I mean when I say «Росія, іди нахуй.»
Я жить в Україні, чи ні.
Чи хто згадає, чи забуде
Мене в снігу на чужині—
Однаковісінько мені.
В неволі виріс меж чужими,
І, не оплаканий своїми,
В неволі, плачучи, умру,
І все з собою заберу,
Малого сліду не покину
На нашій славній Україні,
На нашій—не своїй землі.
І не пом'яне батько з сином,
Не скаже синові: «Молись,
Молися, сину: за Вкраїну
Його замучили колись».
Мені однаково, чи буде
Той син молитися, чи ні...
