"You of all people already know the answer to that, Shae. We don’t handle this world. We make it handle us."

I cannot believe it took me 2 years to finally read the final installment of the Grenn Bone Saga. With this final one she really solidified her status as one of the greates writers of urban fantasy.

To start off, I cannot believe that this book took us through over 20 years of this family. Books that span over a long period of time have always had my heart and this one doesn't change that. Seeing the characters we met on book 1 growing old whislt we see the youngests ones earning their place in the clan and the story was really a great thing to witness.

This review will contain spoilers from now on and will probably be quite lenghty lol.

I think the easiest way to review this book is to talk about each character that made this book so great.

Of course I cannot start without talking first about Hilo. Hilo is without a doubt the most interesting character from the whole trilogy. The sheer growth of his character is sop big and absurd that I thought it would be hard to make me like him more. He was the Pillar of the No Peak Clan for 27 years up until his death (I freaking knew he would die but to see it happen right at the end of the book just hurts more than anything else). During this time he solidified his place as well as introducing different things that improved the clan in so many ways. The Hilo of this book is quite different from what we see on book 1 but that change was necessary since he could not be the hot headed person he was in his 20s. Seeing him up until he was on his 50s was a pleasure and even though he suffered a lot I'm glad that he done everything in his power to see the clan surpass all the obstacles put on his way.

Shae's arc in this book did seem like a endless rollercoaster. This woman on top of having the very difficult task of being the clan's Weather Man. There are loads of plots and financial decisions she imposes, some of them better than others. She marries Papi and has one daughter with him which I loved. Towards the end she is kidnapped and tortured with Jade to the point she stops being able to use it at all so even though she is jadeless by the end of the trilogy and the last Kaul sibling alive, she feels like her job was well done and she will soon retire and help her nephew with being a Pillar. On top of all this she was an important character on the Ayt Mada plot (since she rescued her) and that ultimately lead to Hilo's death as well many years after.

Anden turned out to be one of my favourites characters as well which is funny to say since I didn't particularly care about him the previous two books. He actually turns out to be the one and single most important character in my opinion - even though he is not officialy a Green Bone, he does so much for the family. He is so so important to the Kaul family and his actions made the No Peak Clan be such a prosperous clan at the end.

Wen turned out to have quite an interesting arc. Her relationship with Hilo was so rocky at the start of the book but I'm glad they turned that around and become such a good couple and example for everyone. On top of that she also became a Pillarman which is quite surprising turn of events since she is stone -eyed. Her character really changed the way other people perceive jade and herself was able to make many of the international connections the clan had by the end of the book.

All 3 children of Lan/Hilo a Wen had distinct character arcs. However, in a way I felt they sometimes weren't fully explored, especially Jaya. Jaya only towards the end started having her own POV but we still know next to nothing.
I actually was surprised that Ru died like that but I guess it was an interesting way for the plot to evolve as it did.
I liked to see how Niko's arc evolved - since little he had so much going for him and to see him actually become a Pillar by the end and end the decades of conflict with the Mountain like that, was quite a good way to wrap up the story.

I felt a bit underwhelmed with Bero's story, but I never care much for him so tha's ok by me.

Ayt Mada was such an incredible "villain" up until the end. It's not usual to see such a strong female antagonist, had a blast discovering all of her plots and things she done to have Kekon under the Mountain clan.

Overall, I was kinda expecting more "life threatning events" in a book this long and spanning such a long period of time. However, I still did really like how the story went and how it concluded. Will keep my eyes out for more book from this author.
