A quick enjoyable read despite a few upsetting moments. Ended rather abruptly.

Re-read 2024

2023 re-read: same feelings as in my prior review. Nothing has changed. I adore this book š

I loved this so much!
This was recommended to me after a recent (not loved) read of Annieās Song. With a similar premise in that both have deaf heroines and have a sort of forced/arranged marriage, I still wasnāt sure if Iād like this because of how little I liked the other book.
Boy am I glad to be wrong!
Graeme and Eveline are from warring clans, and are ordered to be married by the king in an attempt to force an alliance between the two families.
For years, everyone has thought Eveline to be ādaftā after she took a fall from a horse and was no longer able to hear or speak.
Turns out, while she canāt hear, she can speak. And she can understand what people say to her when they speak where she can see. She intentionally let those around her believe she was daft in order to get out of a prior betrothal to anā¦unpleasantā¦man.
Graeme and his family quickly realize after they marry all is not as it seems with Eveline. Sheās not only not daft, but sheās incredibly kind and intelligent, not to mention loyal and brave and resilient.
I hated some of the things that were done to Eveline by others in this book, but I loved seeing how strong Eveline was, and how kind she was in spite of everything.
Seeing these two fall in love was so sweet and I canāt wait to see more stories from the two families.
I cannot recommend this enough! Seriously, this might be one of my favorite historical romances Iāve ever read š„°
