Each summer starting a few years back, I decided to read a few romances, and Nora Roberts tends to grab my attention. She's smart, her characters are rounded and interesting and both the settings and the jobs characters hold seem interesting and believeable.
In this case, it shows it's an early story, but I can see some glimpse of the later Roberts. When I started this one, I wasn't aware it was the fourth in a series, so I read it as a stand alone and it does read like that until the very end when you find the family and see all the results of other novels. But it still, holds its ground.
It's not a memorable read, but it can be read. It keeps your interest and the characters are a good fit for each other. The story is a bit out of hand, but that's the ground for Roberts to write even more out of the box stories that have catapulted her to the ceiling of the great romance writers.

i liked it. the series got better by the end. i liked the dynamic between the main characters. i only wish the book had an extended epilogue with all the couples interacting with each other. trace was the most mysterious character of the series and we didn’t get enough of him with the family.

Gillian Fitzpatrick's brother and niece have been kidnapped by a terrorist outfit, who want to get their hands on a serum her brother created that can inoculate people against a worldwide nuclear meltdown. She is recommended to hire mercenary Trace O'Hurley. He's ready to retire, but takes on the job because of the money. Of course, he finds Gillian hot, so that might have something to do with it! He then organises meetings with various people while Gillian demands that he tell her everything and bring her along.

This was all a bit ridiculous and Gillian should have driven me crazy with her too-stupid-to-live behaviour, but I enjoyed it. Although it looks as if it was originally published for the Silhouette Special Edition line, this feels more like a Harlequin Intrigue, because of the suspense element. It's mostly Trace brokering a bunch of ammunition deals to get closer to the terrorist leader and Gillian insisting on being involved (in between throwing herself at him), but it's an easy read, and Trace and Gillian have interesting backstories. Most importantly, their conversations matter. They don't just chat about food or what happened in the other books (Trace's triplet sisters all had books before this one.) Indeed, there's a conversation that addresses the ethics of a nuclear fallout vaccination - how would they decide who gets one? Those little moments of depth (well, more than a typical category romance book) give this some extra oomph.

I recently read one of Nora Roberts' latest books, and it was awful, but I certainly might check out other earlier stuff by her if this is anything to go by.

The book was very exciting . But i really hated how Trace treated Gillian in some situations and how he always shouted and screamed at her . But other than that his character was fine . And I loved the family reunion at the end .

This one was really rough. The characters were shallow, which made the plot line drag on and on. Usually I enjoy Nora Roberts, but this book was a big bust for me.

I had a hard time getting into this one. I think it was because Trace wasn't involved much at all in the first three books of the series. However, I did like him and Gillian together. The last chapter had me in tears.
