*SPOILER ALERT*
Julian, George, Anne, Dick and Timmy are staying at Kirrin Cottage for the hols. Uncle Quentin and Aunt Fanny are on holiday in Spain and have not left an address to contact in case of emergency. One day, they go down to the beach and they find that damson stones are being thrown at them. Soon after, they find the culprit who is Jo, a ragamuffin girl, who was spitting damson stones. Dick bets that if she can spit a damson stone farther than him, he will buy her an ice-cream. Dick loses the bet and George develops a distrusting attitude to this girl, but Dick feels she is sweet and innocent. Throughout the story, the four constantly ponder over whether they should trust her or not.
Two nights later, when Julian lets Timmy out for a run around, he is doped and Kirrin Cottage gets robbed for Uncle Quentin’s precious papers. The next day, when George walks Timmy at evening, she and he get taken hostage. Jo gives from a man who she refused to describe threatening that if Julian doesn’t give them the final paper, they will keep George and kill Timmy.
Eventually, Jo fesses up and tells that her father stole George and Timmy and promises to show them where George and Timmy were. However, Jo gets caught and the others get to the location by their own means, but don’t find George or Timmy inside the caravan. However, on the wall, it says Red Tower in George’s handwriting. On the way back from the caravan, they get lost and inadvertently walk in circles until dark and then settle for camping under a tree with each other. Later that night, Jo finds them and they tell her about it saying Red Tower. She says this is the name of a person who her evil father works with and that she knows where he lives; they would go there tomorrow.
Jo swaps places with George and proves herself worthy of the five’s praise and proves she is a trustworthy character.

Very strange. I took this from the take a book/leave a book on Water Island in the VI. It's an English children's novel from the 50's.
The Five encounter a gypsy girl, Ragamuffin Jo, and treat her badly. She is the key to getting everything to rights in the end. It's an old book, and I was startled at the blatant -isms of the book. Jo is constantly likened to an animal, for example. An interesting book from that angle, but not on its own.
