This was such a great sci-fi “thriller”! There’s a ton of story and mystery to unpack and it unfolds perfectly as you go. It’s exciting and never really dragged, even though there was a lot of “telling not showing” that went on about unraveling the past. It was really fun to have a story like this with women as the main focus

I enjoyed Murphy’s The Wonder State, so I wanted to explore her backlist. Now I’m thinking I might need to focus on her new stuff because this was a mixed bag, and The Possessions has a pretty low rating for Goodreads!

There’s a compelling story here, and the ending feels like something is actually happening, but so much of the book is 1) talk to someone 2) learn something 3) travel to talk to another person. Over and over again which is not a great way to experience a story.

A simple quest-driven sci-fi focused on 8 women and their daughters, who achieve pregnancy and birth without sperm. This story was good for escapism without making me think too hard, and the plot followed a familiar format while still having unexpected reveals and complicated connections. Though at times a little cornier, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and I always love a good feminist quest.
