I think Vampire Academy is becoming my favourite paranormal young adult series. It's really beating the hell out of some of the other stuff I've read, and I find it really enjoyable. I hadn't been expecting to like it as much because once upon a time I watched that god awful movie, but it's really putting that movie to shame.
I enjoyed the character additions to the cast with this one too, particularly Adrian. I can't wait to read more.

So much goes down in this book that there’s almost no break. You get to meet quite a few new people including another spirit user! Be prepared to cry by then end though.

Rose is insufferable for most of this book. It was hard to read, especially when the audio performer made her voice so bloody whiny.
Nothing really happens until the last two-ish hours of this (audio)book. It’s pretty boring, overall. (Except for when Adrian buys Rose countless perfumes. Seriously weird way of flirting. Like, you smell good enough to eat, but you’d be mouthwatering with a little seasoning? 🧐)
I’m going to read book three anyway because I’m putting off reading a new release that I’m sure will break my heart a bit.

My main hang up is the developing relationship between Rose and Dimitri.

I enjoyed the character growth in this book. Rose acknowledges her faults and tries to fix them, with little success but still she tries. Her relationship with her mother is very interesting to see and the way it changes as Rose grows as a person and gains new experiences is really quite nice to read.
The thing with Dimitri is still not icking me out like I thought it would. It’s a tiny bit uncomfortable but the reasons are discussed in the book and they do make an effort to move on.
Lissa remains largely personality-less though there are hints to her caring about Rose every so often. She’s very caught up in her boyfriend though and that’s most of her personality.
I was surprised at how this book does not shy away from the inherent horror and trauma of the situations these characters find themselves in. It’s very heavy and Rose most certainly has some sort of ptsd that is shown through flashbacks. Truly, this was darker than I expected it to be and the larger mystery and action had me quite hooked.
