The story parodies political campaigns in general, and perhaps especially the French presidential election of 1974, date of publication of this story. This is the second time Vitalstatistix is challenged by a contender to the leadership of the village, and the first time the Gauls of the village are shown electing leaders as if in democracy; except, the leader has no fixed term and retains leadership until challenged; potentially until death. Also, this story has one of the only few scenes we see Asterix using his sword in a fight.

I think my favourite type of Asterix story, is the sort with unsuspecting people coming across the village. And this is that, on several fronts. Lots of fun.

When Caesar "gifts" the village of Asterix to punish a drunkard legionnaire, it sets off a chain of hilarious political intrigue in the village!

In this one, we learn that legionarys who have served in the Roman army for 20 years get a plot of land for their service. Ceasar gifts one drunken legionary our Gaulish village and he sells it for some wine. Chaos ensues as usual.

The premise was excellent, only the plot rather fell apart as the book progressed.
