Poor David. Active David gets in trouble left and right, all the day long. Shannon has great illustrations.

This book has been a top favorite for two years running. We have since read all of David Shannon's books.

David's sharp teeth kind of freak me out a little, but other than that this is an endearing story.

The board book version of this really worth it because then toddlers can be as bad with it as David is with that fish bowl.

I'm sure I've read this before but I hadn't in a long time. I know the point is that even thought the mother tells David "no" a lot that she still loves him, but it's rough to see the illustrations of David being so upset. Some of the instances are funny, but others show David being angry or crying. I think it would be a good conversation starter, especially if the child in question worries that they aren't loved when they're misbehaving. It's not a book I want to reread often though.

For: readers wanting a book about following rules and hearing "no."

Possible red flags: some readers may find the book too harsh or be offended by the one instance of a naked little boy bottom.

This picture book tells the story from the perspective of a parent and illustrates the ups and downs of parenting. I enjoyed reading this book to my nieces and nephews via Zoom who live in Texas. As I read No Dave to them, I received instantaneous feedback from them from their attentiveness and eagerness to listen to the story. While reading each page I showed them the illustrations and asked them open and leading questions about the book in order for them to share their own experiences in relation to the main character in the book. It was a book in which they obviously enjoyed and were able to relate to; it’s a good read to share with children to teach them the do’s and Don’ts as children while experiencing and living their own lives.

Part of our library's '100 books Every Kid Should Hear Before Kindergarten' list. We read all the books with our grandson this summer in preparation for school. This title is in my top 20 from the project.
