I really loved this book, especially the characters. They're all so different and yet so lovable. My only beef is pretty much what everyone's been saying, which was that it took a while for the world-building to really work for me? Like I was pretty confused for a good bit at the beginning, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Yeah, this book was tropy, but how can I say no to all my favorite tropes?

Especially looking forward to the addition of one of my favorites (fake couple) in the next book.

Actually, I changed my mind. I have one more beef, but it's pretty spoilerific so I saved it for the end.
Spoiler Tristan gets kidnapped and then subsequently killed in this book, which I thought was an odd choice. He spends the bulk of the story out of commission and removed from the plot, and so to have him be killed at the end lacked significant punch. I just didn't know him well enough. I know that his death and the grief it caused propelled the story, but I just wish that I'd gotten more time with him so that his death made me feel some of that grief.

It just pushes me to comparison to Bardugo's 'Six of crows'. I liked the idea as well as the world and it's magic system a lot more here. It was interesting and story set in 19 century Paris is all i would need. However the characters and their personalities just weren't able to pull of such environment. They had personalities of course it wasn't like they didn't but they felt very one-dimensional and I lacked connection with those characters. That's the main reason why Six of crows were able to pull it off - they were much more interesting and unlike those seemed to have some depth

I just don’t really care about ‘any’ of these characters. Like. At all.

Only series that can cure the sickness that six of crows left in my heart. Literally so good

Absolutely nothing wrong with the book. But at about 70% I just lost interest. I forced myself to finish it and ended up liking the ending. Tbh, the book reminds me too much of Six of Crows. And instead of making me enjoy it more, this ended up making the book harder to enjoy.
