Good read! The syntax took a bit getting used to as the dialog was not in quotation marks and the first few pages has a lot of back and forth between two characters. But I adjusted midway through the second chapter. After that, I found the book hard to put down. It was a quick read! I wasn’t thrilled with the ending, but it was a gripping story and captured my attention.

A coming of age tale of class, peer pressure, and an exploration in why people behave the way they do.

well i think that most of the scenes between some of the characters were unnecessary, the main characters are just so so stupid, just if they were making different choices in some of the situations it would have been better.
Spoiler Connell's depression is i think the best chapter in this book, in some way it is written very good not like the rest of the book

This book was really tough to read as someone with similar life experience as Marianne. So for personal reasons, I hated the book, it made me sick to my stomach. Every time something happened to Marianne I felt like it happened to me/will happen to me and that’s scary. That’s the only reason I rated it this high, because it made me feel such a strong emotion, but that emotion has left me disgusted with myself. I didn’t like the authors message, it felt like she was dictating a path for this character, and it’s such an overdone take on a traumatized character, done so graphically, it’s hard to see. All I felt the whole time is “you are bound to your circumstances”. I do think this is a realistic depiction of abuse and it’s affects, I just wish there was more hope and change present. Marianne didn’t really grow in that regard and it was horrifying to see that.

Honestly was really appalled by the cover...But this book quite frankly disappointed me. Really had to force myself to read although it's only 266 pages long . The characters are insufferable and don't seem to ever stop whining about futile subjects. Also kind of disappointed by the ending that one took too long to come and two wasn't as dramatic and sad as it was described to me... It is bittersweet at best and I really am being nice here. Lorraine and Joanna are the only characters worth reading and even they can't save the book from being atrociously boring and almost pedant. Marianne really is the character that made me sigh the most-and there's a lot of them ... Kind of get why she was bullied because the "I'm not like other girls " kind of attitude was just idiotic and didn't make me feel like I was supposed to have empathy towards her. Quite the opposite actually.
Not gonna go on and on about this waste of time but yeah... don't read this book if you expect something extraordinary...
